Painting and Illustration
These classes will introduce a variety of media and techniques in painting and in illustration. Students will have the opportunity to work from observation, transcriptions, and from their own personal expression. Color, composition, mark making, and specific tools will be emphasized. A study of contemporary and classical masters will inspire students to explore a new approach to their artwork.
Students create and design their own code name to represent an aspect of their own identity. By developing basic graffiti elements: tags, throws, and pieces, students will incorporate imagery demonstrating their understanding of symbolism, typography, and color relationships. Ideas are developed by sketching with markers and pencils and final ideas will be spray painted on an outdoor wall. A study of the history of graffiti from controversial statements to high art will be explored.
